Maras is a small town located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where ancient customs are still part of the everyday lives of the communities. The Maras salt ponds were built in 200 – 900 B.C. by Chanapata culture before the Incas and once upon a time, Maras used to supply the Inca empire with its unique salt of soft pink colour.
